Is heat-shrink tubing waterproof?
The answer is: it depends. Simple, single-wall tubes offer some protection against moisture but are not completely waterproof. A truly sealed connection is achieved with dual-wall heat-shrink tubing with adhesive lining. When heated, the internal adhesive melts, seamlessly enveloping the cable to form an extremely robust, waterproof seal. This type is ideal for outdoor use, damp environments, or underground installation.

How well does heat-shrink tubing insulate?
Yes, its primary function is electrical insulation. It prevents short circuits, protects against contact with live conductors, and thus increases the operational safety of a connection. Depending on the specification, heat-shrink tubes are suitable for use in low-voltage and even medium-voltage applications.

Can heat-shrink tubing withstand gasoline?
Again, the material is the deciding factor. Standard tubes made from polyolefin have only limited resistance to chemicals like gasoline. With prolonged exposure, they can become brittle or break down. Therefore, for use in environments with fuels or oil – for example, in automotive or industrial applications – there are specialized heat-shrink tubes made from materials like PTFE, Viton® or Kynar®. These offer excellent resistance to fuels, oils, and aggressive solvents.

Absolutely! Heat-shrink tubing is a standard method for securing electrical cables. It is frequently used for:

  • Repairing damaged cable insulation
